Rohit Gurunath Sharma (born 30 April 1987) is an Indian international cricketer and the current captain of India men's cricket team in all formats. Considered one of the best batsmen of his generation and one of the greatest opening batters of all time, Sharma is known for his timing, elegance, six-hitting abilities and leadership skills.

He plays as a right-handed batsman for India national cricket team in international cricket, Mumbai Indians in IPL and for Mumbai in domestic cricket. Rohit also captains Mumbai Indians and the team has won 5 titles under his leadership, the most by any team.


Early life


Sharma was born on 30 April 1987 in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra. His mother, Purnima Sharma, is from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. His father, Gurunath Sharma, worked as a caretaker of a transport firm storehouse.

Sharma was raised by his grandparents and uncles in Borivali because of his father's low income.

He would visit his parents, who lived in a single-room house in Dombivli, only during weekends. He has a younger brother, Vishal Sharma. Sharma joined a cricket camp in 1999 with his uncle's money.


Domestic career



Sharma made his first-class debut for Mumbai in 2005-06. He scored 90 runs in his first innings and 100 runs in his second innings. He was the leading run-scorer for Mumbai in the 2006-07 Ranji Trophy, scoring 918 runs at an average of 50.90. He was also the leading run-scorer in the 2007-08 Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 575 runs at an average of 64.37.

Sharma made his List A debut for Mumbai in 2006-07. He scored 100 runs in his first innings and 50 runs in his second innings. He was the leading run-scorer for Mumbai in the 2006-07 Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 575 runs at an average of 64.37.

Sharma made his Twenty20 debut for Mumbai in 2008. He scored 33 runs in his first innings and 20 runs in his second innings. He was the leading run-scorer for Mumbai in the 2008 Indian Premier League, scoring 317 runs at an average of 39.66.


International career



Sharma made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India in 2007. He scored 50 runs in his first innings. He was the leading run-scorer for India in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, scoring 490 runs at an average of 54.44.

He was also the leading run-scorer in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, scoring 264 runs at an average of 132.00.

Sharma made his Test debut for India in 2013. He scored 177 runs in his first innings. He was the leading run-scorer for India in the 2014-15 Test series against Australia, scoring 523 runs at an average of 74.66.

Sharma made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut for India in 2007. He scored 33 runs in his first innings. He was the leading run-scorer for India in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, scoring 264 runs at an average of 66.00.


Captaincy



Sharma was appointed captain of the Mumbai Indians in 2013. He led the team to victory in the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL), 2015 IPL, 2017 IPL, 2019 IPL and 2020 IPL. He is the most successful captain in the history of the IPL.

Sharma was appointed vice-captain of the India national cricket team in 2017. He was appointed captain of the team in 2022.


Personal life



Sharma is married to Ritika Sajdeh, a sports event manager. They have a son, Samaira, who was born in 2018.
